My style of photography …
For me, taking a picture is all about telling your story… all within a fraction of a second. When it comes to photo sessions, I like to keep things natural, simplistic, organic, and candid. And that goes for all aspects, from the natural haze and glow of sunlight, to the surrounding background. This is why my “studio” comes with the bare necessities — a camera and a small arsenal of lenses. And although I agree that it is important to capture traditional posed setups, I also think it’s more important to capture an honest reflection… a candid gem… and my favorite ones just happen to be that of relationships.
*Edit* — Since posting this, I’ve had quite a few people ask me for the location of image above. It’s actually a location I frequently use — Yorba Linda Regional Park. Funny thing is that in the past, I’ve offered this exact spot at the park for setups/shoots, but often clients have opted out saying it was to “bare and brown with not much going on in the background”. Which is perfectly fine.. I do want my clients to be happy with their photos after all. But every now and then, I definitely suggest allowing your photographer to have at it and let their creative juices flow… even for just a setup or two. You may be pleasantly surprised
As for newborn sessions, you’ve probably noticed that I minimize my use of props… Or that when I do use props, the intent is to not take away from the newborn (this is also the reason why I rarely watermark, which I’ve been told isn’t really a good thing). The goal is to evoke an emotional connection and to keep the focus on the newest little blessing. For me, the greatest satisfaction in my work comes when I hear comments that pertain specifically to the “beautiful baby” I’ve photographed, versus comments that even mention the fact that some kind of prop or printed backdrop was used. Well that, and seeing my images blown up and hanging on the walls of my client’s home like a work of art (and rightfully, newborns are true works of art!). 😉
So there you have it, the philosophy behind Candid Gems and a little insight into what I hope to achieve with each session.
So who’s ready for me to capture your candid gems? 😉
